Let’s be honest. SDF has had a perception problem. For many dentists, the conversation starts and ends with one word: staining. The image of a blackened lesion is hard to shake, and if you haven’t yet worked SDF into your practice, that concern has probably been part of the reason why.
Here’s the thing, though — that hesitation, while understandable, is keeping a lot of clinicians from a tool that’s genuinely useful in situations where staining is simply not a factor. Post-crown-preparation desensitization is one of them. SDF only stains if there is a cavitated lesion present, in which case, a restoration will mask discoloration. If there is no infected lesion present, and SDF is applied just to address sensitivity, the tooth structure will not change color. The clinical evidence for SDF use specifically to address hypersensitivity in patients undergoing vital tooth preparation for a fixed crown prosthesis is really quite good.

A 2022 randomized controlled trial put SDF head-to-head against two widely used desensitizers — potassium nitrate and glutaraldehyde (GLUMA) — to find out which agent does the best job of managing post-prep hypersensitivity. The results weren’t close. SDF came out on top, and by a meaningful margin.
Study Findings: SDF Takes the Lead
All three desensitizing agents outperformed the control — no surprises there. But silver diamine fluoride delivered statistically significant reductions in hypersensitivity at every post-application measurement point, and maintained that edge over potassium nitrate and glutaraldehyde through the 30-day follow-up.
In short: SDF didn’t just work right away — it kept working. That kind of durability matters enormously in a restorative context where a temporary solution just doesn’t cut it.

Why Does SDF Work So Well?
SDF’s mechanism of action is a bit of an overachiever. Unlike potassium nitrate, which works by depolarizing nerve fibers to reduce pain signal transmission, or glutaraldehyde, which coagulates proteins to physically plug tubules, silver diamine fluoride operates on multiple fronts simultaneously:
- Silver ions occlude dentinal tubules by forming insoluble precipitates with calcium and phosphate, physically blocking the hydrodynamic pathway that triggers the pain response.
- Fluoride promotes the formation of fluorohydroxyapatite, increasing mineral density and hardening the dentin surface. Treated dentin has been shown to be significantly harder than untreated healthy dentin.
- The antimicrobial properties of silver inhibit biofilm formation and bacterial colonization on the exposed dentin surface — a bonus that neither potassium nitrate nor glutaraldehyde can claim.
That trifecta — tubule occlusion, remineralization, and antimicrobial activity — helps explain why SDF outperformed single-mechanism agents in this study and why its effects appear to persist well beyond the initial application.
Ready to Give SDF a Try?
If you’re new to the SDF game and want a user-friendly solution, SilverSense SDF is the perfect choice. It’s a 38% silver diamine fluoride solution — the same concentration used in the clinical literature — FDA cleared as a professional-use tooth desensitizer, and designed for simple chairside use.
Here’s why it works well as a starting point:
- Blue-tinted for better visibility: SDF is typically colorless but SilverSense SDF is tined blue so you can have more control and see it better in the dappen dish.
- Economical dosing: Just one to two drops treats up to five teeth — meaning a single 5 mL dropper bottle goes a long way. It’s cost-effective without sacrificing efficacy.
- Quick and painless application: No drilling, no anesthetic, no lengthy procedure. It’s the kind of treatment patients appreciate — and one that fits seamlessly into a busy clinical schedule.
- Restoration-compatible: SilverSense SDF hardens softened dentin, and a restoration can be placed directly over the treated site when you’re ready.
SilverSense SDF comes in a Standard Kit (single bottle, 20 applicators) and a Clinic Kit (three bottles, 50 applicators), available through all major dental distributors.
What are you waiting for?
Dip your toes into the world of SDF by using it as a desensitizer (reminder, healthy tooth structure won’t stain!) and slowly unlock the full benefits of this outstanding solution.
